An officer from the Scarsdale Police Department conducting traffic enforcement on Post Road shortly after 8 a.m. on Saturday, Jan. 5 stopped Bronx resident Ruben Alvarado Mendoza, 27, when he was spotted driving slowly and randomly accelerating in the roadway.
When Alvarado Mendoza drove over a curb attempting to make a right-hand turn on Fenimore Road, the officer conducted the traffic stop. While speaking with Alvarado Mendoza, the officer said that he “detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the driver and his eyes were glassy and bloodshot.”
Alvarado Mendoza proceeded to fail several Standardized Field Sobriety Tests, and a breathalyzer at the scene showed that he had a blood alcohol content of .15 percent, nearly double the legal limit. Alvarado Mendoza was arrested at the scene and taken to Scarsdale Police Headquarters.
At the Scarsdale Police Department, Alvarado Mendoza submitted to a test that showed he still had a blood alcohol content of .15 percent. He was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated and operation of a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content greater than .08 percent. He was also cited for improperly making a right turn at an intersection and for stopping and standing illegally on a local highway.
Following his arraignment, Alvarado Mendoza was released on $50 bail and is scheduled to appear in Scarsdale Village Court on Wednesday, Jan. 9 to respond to the charges.
