State Steps In to Cure Palmer Ave. Pavement Woes

SCARSDALE, N.Y. – After more than two years of waiting – and a week after a story about the situation appeared on The Daily Scarsdale – the potholed pavement in front of the Metro Deli on Palmer Avenue has been repaired.

"They showed up about 9:30 this morning," said Jimmy Katechis Tuesday afternoon. Katechis is one of the partners in Metro Deli and Last Licks ice cream, another shop on the block. "The state had two trucks out here, eight or nine guys."

The repairs run from the corner of Heathcote and Palmer at the Five Corners intersection halfway up the block. Holes that held water, iced over and added to the area's drainage problems were filled. The pavement was leveled to be even with the rest of the road and drain covers.

A spokesperson for the State Department of Transportation told The Daily Scarsdale on Dec. 2 that someone would be out to assess the problem on Dec. 4. No one showed up, though, said deli co-owner Gregory Kassimis. A week later, a small patch was done in the northbound drive lane, but that wasn't part of the area the Kassimis and Katechis were concerned with.

"It floods when it rains. It ices when it's cold – you can see it now," Kassisimis said Dec. 12, pointing to an area where the largest hole was still filled with iced-over water. "Someone is going to slip and fall. We have a lot of elderly customers who get dropped off, handicapped people, people who walk here. They have to walk out into the street and go around it."

Katechis said he was pleased that the problem had been assessed. "It looks like they did a good job. They really packed it in there."
