“Take a Peek with Peek-a-Bear” is an interactive children’s storybook featuring the title character as he goes on an adventure. Each page features the bear, traveling in a different vehicle – be it a rocket ship, car, helicopter or otherwise – with various hidden windows and frames for children to explore.
Weisfeld said that she has been working on her passion project for some time, little by little, as she completed her daily responsibilities as a mother of three, wife and art director for the Pediatric Cancer Foundation.
“I’ve written lots of ideas down for children’s books, but this is the one I have been working on and off for a long time in between raising kids,” she said. “I just love kids, and being able to help kids has always been a dream of mine.”
The colorful, interactive book – which is geared toward preschoolers – has caught the attention of mothers and booksellers alike. It’s already been awarded a gold medal in the Mom’s Choice Award and a silver medal in the Moonbeam Children’s Book Awards.
“We were definitely excited about the award,” Weisfeld added. “It makes you feel good that it stands out. It’s good for promotion and to put that seal on the cover.”
“Take a Peek with Peek-a-Bear” is available on Amazon and at various local bookstores, including Child’s Play in Scarsdale, Womrath Book Shop in Bronxville and Tralala in Irvington.
“I’ve been selling them like hot cakes,” Bonnie Ernst, owner of Child’s Play, said. “It’s a great interactive book that is quickly becoming a gift on everybody’s list.”
In the process of writing and self publishing her book, Weisfeld started the Scarsdale-based, Peek-a-Bear Press, a company she hopes to continue expanding. She is hopeful of franchising Peek-a-Bear, creating a stuffed animal, mascot, app and interactive computer program.
“I learned that it’s a difficult project to take on, it took longer than I thought it would. I learned a lot, there are so many components to something like this,” she said. “This book is hopefully one of many in a series that we will publish. I’m trying to do this as a full-time gig, but life has responsibilities.”
