Scarsdale residents and local leaders said thank you to neighbors who served in the military Monday with a Memorial Day parade and ceremony.
The parade went off despite the morning rain. Multiple generations were represented, from babies unaware of what Memorial Day means and toddlers who just love playing with those tiny American Flags to their parents and grandparents who either served or know someone who served in a war.
You cannot measure the depth of their loss, Retired Brigadier Gen. Donald Lee Singer, the former Greenburgh police chief, said. We will not forget their sacrifice and service.
Following the parade there was a brief ceremony in which veterans had their chance to talk about their experiences and dedication to the armed forces.
In one of the most touching moments, Assemblywoman Amy Paulin read a poem called Its The Soldier, expressing gratitude to the veterans who are the real reason for Americas freedom.
It's the soldier who salutes the flag, serves under the flag and whose coffin is draped by the flag, who gives the protestor the right to burn the flag.
Pride for the country and the veterans who fought for it was the theme of the day and Scarsdale residents who choose to, can continue to pay tribute to fallen soldiers through the 52 memorial gardens dedicated by the Scarsdale American Legion.
