SCARSDALE, N.Y. - With winter right around the corner, teachers at the Scarsdale Middle School have kicked off the district’s annual Popham House Pajama Program drive to benefit some of the area’s neediest residents.

Last week, educators Meghan Lahey, Jane Strobel and Emma Wixted began collecting new pajamas and books for teens and tots in need. The drive began on Monday and will conclude on Thursday, Nov. 10.

Each year, teachers within the Scarsdale School District host the pajama drive, which concludes with the annual arrival of a school bus that students fill with everything that was collected. This year, students from the three grades in Popham House will join the middle schoolers stuffing the bus.

“The Pajama Program provides new pajamas and new books to children in need, many of whom are waiting and hoping to be adopted,” according to the program’s mission statement. “These children live in various situations including group homes, shelters and temporary housing facilities and are shuffled often from one place to another. Many of them have been abandoned, abused or neglected.

“Most of these children have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a mother or father tuck them in at bedtime with warm, clean pajamas and a bedtime story. Some of the children we serve are living with their families below the poverty level, in desperate need of food, clothing and shelter.”

After it departs from Scarsdale, the bus will then make its way to other schools in Westchester County that are participating in the program. Donations or new pajamas and goods can be dropped off at the security desk at the front security desk at the Middle School until the students stuff the bus on Nov. 10.
