SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Scarsdale will soon be a launching pad for future scientists, as Destination Science comes to the village to host summer camps for elementary school students in Westchester County.

Beginning in July, the camps will feature team building exercises and will combine science education and games. Kids will build roller coasters, design their own robots and participate in a bridge-building exercise. Each one-week session will focus on different aspects of science.

“Our goal is to give kids a love of science,” co-CEO Kathy Heraghty said. “Many of the jobs of the future will involve STEM – science, technology, engineering and math. Kids simply aren’t getting enough of those subjects in their diet.”

Outside of the lessons, science will also be incorporated into free time and snack time. Children will play “Comet Ball” outside and make “Solar S’Mores,” among other activities.

The camp currently has locations in California, Florida, Washington, Texas and Long Island. Scarsdale is one of eight municipalities in the county that will be run in coordination with local recreation departments. The Scarsdale camp will be held at the Scarsdale Congressional Church for four weeks from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. They are currently registering for elementary school students.

Heraghty said that the camp anticipates employing 15 educators from Westchester.

“We recruit our leaders from among elementary school educators, as well as science instructors,” she said. “We are looking for the most enthusiastic and energetic team possible.”
