Lunch is busy but dinner is still a hidden secret, according to General Manager David Heinman. He said many folks still don't know the restaurant is there, tucked inside the giant bookstore at the Vernon Hills Shopping Center in Scarsdale.
The airy space -- think blond woods, bookshelves galore and an expansive outdoor patio complete with a bocce court, fire pit, outdoor dining area and lounge area -- not only serves up a relaxed vibe, but offers a thoughtful and shareable menu courtesy of Colorado-native Chef Sheamus Feely.
Among some of the items you'll find: a brisket burger, brick-cooked chicken, guacamole with rich chunks of fresh avocado and a chopped fresh-from-the-garden vegetable salad.
Wine and beer are also on the menu, many of it from New York State.
The casual eatery boasts a coffee bar in the front complete with barstools ideal for diving into lemon ricotta pancakes or, later in the day, a glass of Chardonnay and plancha-cooked salmon. There is also plenty of lounge and communal seating as well as countertop room where you can plug in a laptop, read a book and order a meal (or not).
The Scarsdale eatery is the first of five Barnes & Noble Kitchens being rolled out by the company. Others to follow include Edina, MN; Folsom, CA; Loudon, VA; and Plano, TX.
Barnes & Noble Kitchen is at 680 White Plains Rd., 914-723-3416, www.barnesandnoblekitchen.com.
