WCC's O'Hare Wins Heats, Top Seed in Swim Finals

SCARSDALE, N.Y. -- Midway through her 14-and-under girls’ 100 breaststroke heat Monday, Libby O’Hare felt it was time to pick up the speed. The move worked as O’Hare won her race at the Westchester County Swim Conference 12- and 14-and-under qualifier.

O’Hare, representing Westchester Country Club, finished with a time of  1:13.13, earning her the top seed in the Westchester County Swim Conference Championship, Thursday, 11 a.m. at Westchester Country Club. The top 16 swimmers and/or relay teams move into the finals.

The 13-year-old eighth-grader-to-be at Saxe Middle School in New Canaan, Ct., finished a full second ahead of the second seed. O’Hare also brought her time down by 1.33 seconds from her original seed time.

“When I saw people next to me and we were pretty far in the race, I knew I was on a pretty good pace, but I knew I had to swim faster,” O’Hare said. Throughout the race, O’Hare sensed she was moving through the water. “I felt I was going at a decent pace because I felt smooth, fast and not tiring out,” O’Hare said. “I felt really good about my time when I saw it. I was just hoping to get into the final eight and into finals. Now, I would like to try and do better at conferences.”

O’Hare was one of many Westchester Country Club swimmers to qualify for finals as a top seed or within the top three. The girls’ 13-and-under 200 freestyle relay time of Lauren Stotebery, Nicole Veru, O’Hare and Scotti earned the top seed with a time of 1:50.58. The boys’ 13-and-under team 200 free relay is seeded third. T. Speres is the top seed, along with Harrison Recreations’s Alex Corda, in the boys’ 12-and-freestyle with a time of 25.95.  Andrew Stotesbery earned a trio No. 1 seeds, in the boys’ 14-and-under 100 free (51.34), 100 backstroke (58.82) and 100 butterfly (57.44).
