RYE, N.Y. - The three Rye High School juniors charged with felony assault and misdemeanor unlawful imprisonment and hazing charges in connection with a Jun. 1 incident involving middle school students pleaded not guilty Tuesday to the pair of misdemeanor charges at Rye City Court.
A plea has not yet been entered for the felony second degree assault charge.
Sean Pinson and Tristan Scragg, both 17, along with 16-year-old Max Meyerson, were also placed under a full stay-away order of protection by judges Joseph Latwin and Richard Runes, ordering them to stay away from the younger students' school and homes.
According to Westchester County Police, the three teens forced several rising freshman into a car in front of the Rye Library and drove to the Marshlands Conservancy in Rye. There, the suspects used a large piece of wood to paddle two victims several times. One of the paddled students was treated at a hospital for his injuries, police said, and both suffered bruising and other injuries to their buttocks and legs.
Rye Middle School students told the Rye Daily Voice there is a tradition of hazing in Rye that culminates in a day known as "Freshman Friday."
The teenagers next scheduled court appearance is July 24 in Rye City Court.
