Nassau County Police learned of the crime on Thursday, Dec. 12, after a post office employee called police with concerns that an 81-year-old East Meadow resident might be the target of a scam, said the Nassau County Police.

According to detectives, the victim received a phone call sometime in November from an unknown man who told her that she had won $5.5 million but needed to send $500 in order to claim the money.

The woman sent the money.

The victim was contacted again on Friday, Dec. 6, and was instructed to send an additional $500 to claim the winnings and once again she sent the money, police said.

The victim was contacted a third time on Thursday and instructed to send an additional $500 and was in the process of sending the money when an employee in the East Meadow Post Office, who felt something was wrong, notified police.

Detectives request anyone with information regarding this crime to contact Nassau County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS. All callers will remain anonymous.

The department is also reminding all residents to call 911 immediately if they are contacted by any individual requesting that they send money or gift cards.
