Rye Library Displays Art from Local Psychologist

RYE, N.Y. - When Rye Hospital Center psychologist Mitchell Flaum isn't tending to the psychological needs of his patients, you can find him working on his artwork or practicing Kabbalah, a form of Jewish mysticism.

"A good psychologist relies on intuition to a certain extent, and any good artist must have an intuitive side," Flaum said. "It very much ties into my work as a psychologist."

Flaum's most recent exhibit, on display at the Rye Free Reading Room, is titled "In The Beginning: The Mystery of the Shattered Vessels, or Humpty Dumpty Re-Visited" and deals, literally and metaphorically, with reconnecting broken pieces.

To help him create his exhibit, Flaum used a piece of a magazine clipping for inspiration.

"It's about giving new life to a thing that had one purpose and has been recreated," Flaum said. "The focus of life is growing from your experiences and reinventing yourself."

In both his work as an artist and a psychologist, Flaum hopes his patients and patrons harness the importance of recreation.

"There is always a new way to recreate yourself," Flaum said. "Circumstances are not there to limit you, they are there to let you grow."
