While welcoming the NCAA Football Champion Ohio State Buckeyes to the White House, Vance accidentally dropped the trophy, leading to a near game-changing turnover.
President Donald Trump, Vance, and other members of the administration were on hand at the White House's South Lawn when the VP attempted to lift the trophy, which subsequently broke off its base.
The incident was captured on video and later shared by the White House on YouTube, accompanied by Queen's "We Are The Champions" playing in the background.
Even Trump cringed slightly when the base of the trophy hit the floor while players scrambled to collect it.
Vance took to Twitter following the incident to make light of dropping the trophy.
"I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it," he posted, though the reactions were mixed.
Ohio State topped Notre Dame in January in the National Championship, besting the Fighting Irish 34-23 in a game that was not as close as the score would indicate.
The trophy is expected to survive and be awarded to next year’s champion.
