Major League Baseball Expected To Suspend Players Monday

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Major League Baseball is set to suspend several players for using performance enhancing drugs Monday, including New York York Yankees Alex Rodriguez and Francisco Cervelli.

Rodriguez, who has admitted using PEDs in the past as late as 2009, has never been suspended but is expected to receive one of the longest and harshest suspensions due to his connection to a Major League investigation stemming from the Florida clinic Biogenesis, which has cooperated with an investigation of steroid use.

CBS News reported that a lifetime ban is being considered by the league for Rodriguez, according to a major league team executive. Such a ban is an option for Commissioner Bud Selig under his authority to act in the best interest of the game.

As many as 15 players could be punished in connection with the Biogenesis investigation, according to a major league team executive. With a Monday announcement, any player suspended for 50 games, the penalty for first-time offenders, would be able to serve their suspensions and be eligible to play in this year's postseason, which begins Oct. 1.

Monday's announcement is expected to come in a written statement, according to league sources and several media organizations with no plans for a press conference.
