Gibbons Takes on New York Marathon for Kids Health

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. - Mike Gibbons’ commitment to beat his own weight problem and to help raise awareness in battling childhood obesity hit a high mark Tuesday when the Dobbs Ferry resident received confirmation that he will be running in the ING New York Marathon Nov. 6.

“The training has been rough,” said Gibbons, who has dropped nearly 200 pounds during his life-changing quest. “I set a goal to run the marathon to raise money for ‘Team For Kids,’ helping young people learn more about living a healthier life. It was my goal to run in the New York Marathon.”

Gibbons, a Dobbs Ferry-based realtor and health coach for "Take Shape for Life," began dropping weight and running last year, shedding the pounds while raising funds for his goal of running the marathon. The former Stepinac High football player and U.S. Marine said his life has improved and he is compelled to help others do the same.

"Team for Kids" is supported by New York Road Runners' Youth and Community Services, whose programs combat childhood obesity and introduce children in low-income communities to the tools they need to live a healthy lifestyle.

Gibbons’ next hurdle will be the Yonkers Marathon on Sept. 18 – a local test that will help him prepare for the New York City Marathon.

"Whether you are a runner, have worked with children or have kids yourself, I hope you will join me to support this great cause," said the father of three. "This cause, 'Take Shape for Life,' the marathon, all keep me motivated to keep going."
