Dobbs Ferry Football Honored by Board of Education

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Wearing their brand new red state champion fleece pullovers, the Dobbs Ferry Eagles beamed with pride on Thursday night.

“It’s surreal almost, the feeling you get when you’re a state champion and here they are, 2011 state champions,” said football head coach Jim Moran.

The basking period continued for the Dobbs Ferry football team as the board of education honored the New York State Class C champions.

Players, coaches and cheerleaders were all present to share their thoughts on the team’s run to the state title and what it means to the community.

“It’s been an extraordinary fall season and I think that in the face of the community all of the student athletes that are here have really restored Dobbs Ferry to its rightful place in the football legends,” said Dobbs Ferry superintendent Lisa Brady.

There were plenty of first year members of the Dobbs Ferry school district celebrating with Brady, high school principal John Falino and Moran all in their inaugural years in the village.

“This is a great way for all of us to start the year and it’s certainly a great year for me to come in and enter with such wonderful things happening in the community,” Falino said.

Moran said the title was something that each member of the team had on their mind from the very beginning.

“Back in March, we set a goal for all of us,” he said.  “I actually had them all write it down.  To a man they all wrote ‘we want to win a state championship.’  It wasn’t ‘we want to go to Syracuse,’ it wasn’t, ‘I want to rush for 1,000 yards.’  It was, ‘I want to be a state champion.’”

Falino said, while congratulating the high school team, that the athletes themselves transcend the football field.

“One of the big reasons why we’re acknowledging them, obviously in part because they’ve been so successful on the field, but also these kids really conduct themselves the right way they really represent the best of Dobbs Ferry,” he said.
