Two dozen varsity, junior varsity and modified level players or all experience levels worked through Gizzi's program as the Rockland County native began to import her teaching and coaching expertise to the aspiring Yellow Jackets tennis players.
"I want to work on getting the program stronger from modified to varsity so that the girls can grow and improve," said Gizzi, who coached at Albertus Magnus High School for seven years and played at St. Thomas Aquinas College before coming to Hastings as boys coach last spring. "We have some talent here, so the most important thing is to have the players focused on tennis."
Gizzi, who is assisted by Shannon Mulholland, said the goal of summer practice is to get ready to play and to define who will be the varsity players and what positions they will play on the squad.
"We'll do agility and skills drills all geared on tennis and get in shape," Gizzi said. "Most of the girls have played at Hastings or other programs, and we have a lot of good upcoming years. The goal is to make Hastings tennis strong with three teams going."
