Young Hastings Caddie David Osband Earns Full Scholarship To College

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Despite being an outstanding high school student -- involved in everything from band to the golf team to a club dedicated to studying ancient cultures, David Osband of Hastings-on-Hudson, was unsure if college was in his future.

The slumping economy had taken a toll on his family’s finances, and Osband’s parents were each working two jobs to make ends meet. In eighth-grade, he began caddying at Ardsley Country Club to help them, not knowing the job would later lead to a life-changing opportunity.

Osband was one of four students from the tri-state area who interviewed for the Chick Evans Caddie Scholarship – a full, four-year housing and tuition college scholarship awarded to golf caddies – on Feb. 25 in New York City. All four, including Osband, were subsequently awarded the scholarship and will begin college this fall. The scholarship is sponsored by the Western Golf Association (WGA).

“The Evans Scholarship is going to allow me to live the American dream, a dream that seems less and less accessible these days,” said Osband, a senior at Hastings High School who will attend Northwestern University, in Evanston, Ill., in the fall. “With this education, I can build a life for myself … and for that opportunity, I am forever grateful.”

Evans Scholars are chosen for the prestigious scholarship based on showing a strong caddie record, excellent academics, demonstrated financial need and outstanding character. The scholarship is valued at more than $80,000 over four years.

“Each of these deserving Scholars epitomizes what our Program has been about since its creation in 1930,” said Dennis O’Keefe, WGA Chairman. “Their dedication, hard work and sacrifice is humbling, and we are honored to be able to help them pursue their dreams.”
