IRVINGTON, N.Y. -- The Peer Leadership Program at Irvington High School got a head start with an overnight retreat at the Blue Mountain Lodge, from Aug. 27-28.

The program -- which the district describes as a full-year, highly selective course for seniors who display strong character, integrity and leadership qualities -- is designed to support freshmen transition to high school and foster a positive community in the high school.

During the retreat, 33 peer leaders, along with faculty advisers Jessica Hughes, Andrew Lund and Nadia Parikka, enjoyed a weekend of icebreakers, team building and engaging activities.

They also received a visit from Irvington High School Principal David Cohen, who participated in activities with the students.

"Everyone is looking forward to a great year with the freshmen students," Cohen said. "Our goals are to support our ninth-graders in their transition to high school and identify ways to advance the program."

Peer leaders and members of the freshman class will collaborate on a number of team building activities during the annual Field Day on Friday, Sept. 16, at Matthiessen Park.
