Hastings Board of Ed Introduces New Superintendent

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Roy Montesano was formally introduced as the new superintendent of the Hastings School District on Monday night and the board of education was beaming as it welcomed him. However, Montesano will not take over as the new full-time superintendent until July 1.

“He brings a wealth of experience, a terrific demeanor and a great approach,” said Eileen Baecher, president of the Hastings Board of Education.

Montesano spoke personally with board members, teachers, administrators and anyone else at the meeting after his formal introduction to the district. He said it was the culture of the village that originally attracted him to Hastings.

“They place a lot of value and high standards on education and academics and it just seems like a real close family atmosphere that wants to do well for its children,” he said.

Montesano’s contract will begin on July 1 and is for five years with a starting annual salary of $235,000. Montesano was actually offered the position last year, but was unable to accept it at the time.

“It had more to do with a pension situation that was not advantageous to leave at the time,” he said. “For pension purposes it would not have been a smart move and I decided to wait one more year to get over that hump and now it makes perfect sense.”

Montesano has been a middle school science teacher, a principal, a director of curriculum and technology and for the past 12 years has been a superintendent in the Westwood and Ramsey school districts in New Jersey, the board said.

The board also pointed out the fact that interim superintendent Timmothy Connors had been instrumental in the process of finding a full-time superintendent to take over.

“He really was a guiding hand,” said board member Gabrielle Lesser. “He went above and beyond.”

Other board members echoed similar statements and one even got a bit emotional when describing the process.

“We really have a way of working together collaboratively,” said board member Jodie Meyer. “I would even go so far as to say we were blessed to have Mr. Connors work with us.”
