Dobbs Ferry to Discuss Distracted Driving

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Jacy Good travels around the country to speak to audiences about the dangers of distracted driving and how it can ruin a life.

“She was badly injured in the accident so I think it’s a pretty powerful message to hear her tell her story and to see her and the damage it has done not only to her family but to her physical wellbeing,” said Dobbs Ferry PTSA president Lisa Ferrara.

Good was driving home from her college graduation with her parents when a driver who was texting caused an accident that killed her parents and left Good permanently injured.

“If the result was one student would stop and think before they picked up their phone while they were on the road I think it would be a success,” Ferrara said.

Dobbs Ferry High School will host Good on Wednesday, March 14 and Assistant Principal Sandra Intrieri said the event will be split up into two sessions, with Good speaking to students in the morning and then to parents later that night at 7 p.m. Intrieri said the event is important because high school students can be more easily educated and possibly influence their parents as well.

“I equate it to when they started the designated driver in the late 80s it started with the younger crowd and then it was easier to kind of become more acceptable in society,” Intrieri said. “We all know the older you get the more conservative you get and the harder it is to change your ways.

With smartphones becoming so popular, it’s important for students to remember what’s dangerous while on the road.

“I think we all feel this generation is so connected to their phones and their devices that’s how they communicate,” Ferrara said.  “It’s very hard to disconnect and shut off and I think it’s very powerful to always be connected to your friends. I think everybody needs a reminder that you need complete focus when you’re driving.”
