The Scholastic Arts & Writing Awards is the nation’s longest-running and most prestigious creative arts scholarship and recognition program for students in grades 7–12.

The program received more than 300,000 submissions this year. Daly’s work, entitled “Man vs. Nature”, won in the mixed media category. It is a comparative of man-made industrial design versus the chemical makeup of a wooden tree in the form of a blueprint. Rapay’s entry, “Harmony,” competed in the digital art category. It is an illustration of finding peace and balance in the midst of travails, while battling for and balancing time.

Students’ submissions are blindly judged by leaders in the visual and literary arts. Both students are in Serena Buschi’s IB Art class and these two pieces are part of their individual IB portfolios which includes a body of work that represents personal exploration.

Daly, Rapay and their fellow IB Art classmates will be showcasing their incredible pool of artwork during the annual IB Art Show, to be displayed in the Library Presentation Room during the last two weeks of March.

“We believe the world needs both makers and breakers – those committed to expressing themselves creatively, who push the boundaries of expression and challenge the rest of us to do the same,” said Virginia McEnerney, executive director of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers.

“These are the leaders of tomorrow who are learning right now, via the arts, to see the world differently and provide new ideas and visions."

In addition to being talented artists, Daly and Rapay are full IB Diploma Candidates, members of the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society and involved in extracurricular activities.
