Sannino died on Thursday, April 3, in Fairfield, Connecticut, at the age of 20, according to her obituary. Her cause of death was not made public.
In the weeks since her death, her family, friends, and countless others whose lives she impacted are remembering her as creative, compassionate, and full of enthusiasm.
Known as “JJ,” Sannino was born in Manhattan on August 12, 2004, and raised in Mount Kisco. She was a master’s student in elementary education at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, where she excelled academically and earned a place on the dean’s list. Her lifelong dream of teaching was already being realized through mentoring, tutoring, and coaching young swimmers on the Seven Bridges swim team.
A nationally recognized dancer and choreographer by the age of 16, Sannino brought artistry and heart to every performance. She was a proud member of the Sacred Heart University Dance Company and earned a prestigious spot in the Company Choreography Fellowship Program, where she merged her passion for movement with education, her obituary said.
Her adventurous spirit was as notable as her kindness and talent. Whether skateboarding, skiing black diamond slopes, or diving into wrestling camp and little league baseball, JJ never backed down from a challenge, her obituary said, also adding that she also found joy in life’s quieter moments such as writing poetry, reading, and sitting by the river with her well-loved pets.
"JJ embraced life with fearless enthusiasm," her obituary reads, continuing, "Known for her strength, kindness, and insight, JJ had a unique ability to connect with others. She formed lasting friendships wherever she went and was deeply devoted to those she loved."
Since her death, friends of Sannino's family have set up a GoFundMe page to help them during their grieving process.
"JJ will be deeply missed, but we are certain her radiant light will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing her," organizer Jeffrey Ladd wrote on the page, adding, "Funds raised here will help support Desiree, Nick and Sammy so they can focus on healing during this incredibly difficult time."
As of Monday, April 14, the page had collected over $8,000 in donations out of a $25,000 goal. Those interested in donating can do so by clicking here.
JJ is survived by her mother, Desiree; father, Dominick; her siblings, Sammy and Nick; her grandmother; aunts, uncles, cousins, and many dear friends.
