The incident unfolded early Saturday morning, April 12, at around 2:30 a.m. at a residence on Forrest Drive in the Town of Deerpark, as Daily Voice reported.
State Police troopers responding to a 911 call about a domestic dispute were met on the front porch by a man who had been stabbed in the stomach. He told troopers that the woman inside the home was armed with a knife and a gun, according to police.
Shortly after, the woman — now identified as Nancy Loftus of Port Jervis — emerged from the house and pointed what appeared to be a black handgun at the responding officers. In response to what police described as an “immediate threat,” two troopers discharged their service weapons, striking Loftus.
Troopers administered first aid and called for EMS. Loftus was taken to Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, where she was pronounced dead.
No officers were injured in the incident. The male victim sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was treated at the scene.
Authorities later confirmed that a pellet gun was recovered from the scene. It remains unclear whether Loftus attempted to fire the weapon.
On Monday, April 14, State Police identified the two troopers involved in the shooting as Trooper Kevin Jacks and Trooper James Curtin. Jacks has been with the State Police since March 2016, while Curtin joined in July 2024. Both are assigned to Troop F in Greenville and are currently on voluntary leave.
The incident remains under investigation by the New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call investigators at (845) 344-5300.
