Update On Man Arrested for Burglary in Hastings

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – Phillip Shand, a 24-year-old Yonkers resident, led Hastings police on a nearly three-hour-long chase after officers foiled an attempted burglary Monday afternoon.  Police responded to reports of suspicious activity on Clunie Ave. shortly before 11 a.m. and as they arrived Shand ran out of the front door of a home and fled into the woods.

Police searched the marsh and wooded area parallel to Farragut Parkway for nearly three hours with the assistance of canine units.  Police said the man was found hiding in a garage loft of a home on Ronny Circle around 2 p.m. after the resident called police with the tip.

Hastings Lt. David Dosin said Shand, who was remanded to Westchester County Jail, will be charged with burglary in the second degree, burglary in the third degree and criminal mischief, which are all felonies.  Dosin said Shand will also be charged with petit larceny, resisting arrest and unlawful possession of marijuana.

Police said Shand sustained a head injury in the process of arrest and had a bump on his head.  He was taken to St. John’s Hospital to be examined, but was released.  Although police said the Yonkers man changed clothes in the Ronny Circle loft, he was not able to get away with anything else due to a quick response by officers.

Police said Shand had changed clothes into green hospital scrub pants and a purple dress shirt that he found in the garage loft.
