RIVERTOWNS, N.Y. ? The Rivertowns villages of Dobbs Ferry, Hastings-on-Hudson and Ardsley worked on developing valuable real estate while fighting to protect their communities during weather events in 2012.

Hastings-on-Hudson moved closer to finding a plan for future development of the waterfront as Getty and Exxon continued to clean up acreage along the Hudson River.

Dobbs Ferry and Ardsley monitored plans for the sprawling Rivertowns Square project, which would bring a hotel, movie theater, retail space and residences to an area along the Saw Mill River Parkway near Lawrence Street.

Dobbs Ferry's new Walgreens at the corner of Ashford Avenue and North Broadway was under construction by late October, and the new Stop & Shop revitalization added landscaping to its improvement. The village also went ahead with shoreline stabilization at Waterfront Park and completed renovations to the Gould Park athletic fields.

There were startling home invasions in Hastings and Ardsley, but local police joined Westchester County and other law enforcement agencies and made arrests in both cases before the year was out.

Villagers were swept up in the 2012 presidential election as President Barack Obama and challenger Mitt Romney spent hundreds of millions dollars during the long campaign.

For the second straight year, the Rivertowns endured a mega storm when Hurricane Sandy slammed the East Coast in late October and left many with property damage and power outages for up to three weeks.

The Rivertowns took the blows by Mother Nature and worked to improve infrastructure on several fronts, including Ardsley's Ashford Avenue Bridge. Work was also completed on the Broadway and Main Street triangle intersection in Dobbs Ferry.
