ARDSLEY, N.Y. — Concrete fell from the Ashford Avenue Bridge onto the New York State Thruway in Ardsley in June, prompting road closures and hand-wringing about the state of Westchester County's infrastructure.

The bridge, which connects the villages of Dobbs Ferry and Ardsley and passes over the Saw Mill River Parkway as well as the thruway, had long been ranked among the worst in county. A December 2011 inspection report described it as being in "a state of moderate overall deterioration."

After the concrete fell and damaged cars during a busy rush hour, however, Westchester legislators thanked their lucky stars that no one was hurt and quickly allocated $1.5 million for temporary fixes.

Work on those fixes began in October, with the intermittent road closures and resulting traffic tie-ups continuing.

But county, state and federal officials still need to work together to hasten a joint permanent repair project, estimated to cost $20 million with a target start date of March 2015.
