Plenty of Volunteer Opportunities for Thanksgiving

HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. -- There are many efforts happening in the village to help the less fortunate this Thanksgiving, whether it’s donating your time or your money.  Several local organizations will be doing their part to help out on Thanksgiving weekend.

The Grace Episcopal Church will be having its Alternate Gifts Fair on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 3 p.m.

“This fair features international and very local charities that you can review and then donate to in lieu of buying gifts for family or friends,” said Hastings Mayor Peter Swiderski in a message to residents.

Girl Scout Troop 1713 will also be collecting new, unwrapped toys, gifts and gift cards for the foster children of the Abbott House on Monday, Nov. 21 through Thursday, Dec. 1.  Swiderski said donations can be delivered on weekdays to the Hillside Elementary School or the office or Dr. Steven Ossen at 584 Broadway. Thanksgiving weekend donations can also be made to the home of the Jones Family at 27 Hillside Ave.

Project SHARE, which is run by local resident Jeanne Neumann, hosts homeless men and women for an early Thanksgiving meal on Tuesday, Nov. 22. The meal is prepared by volunteers and served by local high school students. The organization hosts over 500 people a year at the annual meal. As of Thursday, the Project SHARE website said as of Thursday it had raised over $6,300 of its $15,000 goal.

You can also donate all kinds of food to Foodbanks for Westchester as they are always accepting donations and distributing food to the less fortunate in Westchester.
