The Daily Hastings has been on the hunt for some local YouTube videos that stick out from the rest. We want to know which videos you think are the best, funniest or most unique. We recently found one that focuses on the game of stickball in Hastings.
Stickball is a sport that became popular decades ago in the streets of New York as kids used whatever they could to get a game together, but traditionally it was a broom handle and a rubber ball called a Spaldeen.
The sport is quite popular in Hastings, with legitimate leagues that play up at the high school. The Ethical Stickball League is one such group that brings in locals of all ages, but mostly older men who played the game growing up. With such a storied game being played right here in the community there were bound to be a few videos online about it.
We stumbled upon this video that touches on the game's roots and how it even became banned at Hastings Middle School in the late 90's according to text in the clip. The video was created by YouTube member cadyfatcat and has 159 views. It was uploaded on April 18, 2011 and is just over four minutes long. Shots of kids playing stickball at the high school are shown while old time style music provides the background.
One YouTube member, under the handle alterman156 commented on the nostalgia of the sport in Hastings.
"I remember seeing stickball played in the schoolyard during the 1970's," he said.
With the advent of the internet anyone can shoot and upload their own video, so we're leaving it up to our readers to point us in the right direction. Which videos from your community stand out from the rest?
