HASTINGS-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. - Alex Rosenstein, who grew up in Hastings-on-Hudson and now lives just north of Boston, was living through the drama of a manhunt Friday as police and FBI searched for one of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects.
"Its crazy. Everything is shut down, they're searching house to house," said Rosenstein, who lives in the Boston suburb of Somerville. "I was in Washington. D.C., (attending college) on 9/11 but I've never seen anything like this."
Somerville is 10 minutes by car from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Watertown, where one suspect in the Boston Marathon terrorist attack was killed and police were searching Friday morning for his younger brother.
"We're not allowed to leave the house. All public transportation is shut down -- businesses closed," he said.
The brothers are originally from the Russian region of Chechnya, the Boston Globe reported.
The lockdown and manhunt followed a series of events that began late Thursday, including a holdup at a 7-11 convenience store, a carjacking, the shootings of two police officers, one of whom died, and an intense gunfight in Watertown, outside Boston, early Friday.
The suspects threw explosives out the window of their stolen car at police during a car chase, media reports said.
Authorities released photos of the two suspects early Thursday evening.
