Group Offers Help To Bedford Residents With Septic Problems

BEDFORD, N.Y. -- Some residents in Bedford, Lewisboro and Pound Ridge who have problems with their septic system are eligible for help with repair or replacement under a new program offered by the Allied Community Enterprises (ACE).

The program, which is linked to residents' income, is being funded through the New York State Affordable Housing Corporation (AHC), ACE noted.

"These grants are for systems that are in failure or failing, not for expansion," ACE stated. "A system that is failing or has failed is one in where there is evidence of ponding around the system, back up into the house, a pungent odor or wet spot. In the case of failure, the Health Department would have issued a notice of non-compliance."

Homeowners can qualify if they make up to 111 percent of Westchester County's Area Median Income (AMI), the group noted. For a family of two, ACE said the maximum level is $77,325, while for a family of four it is $96,589.
