Dobbs Ferry Firefighter Remembered as Great Friend

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Friends and family are mourning the death of 27-year-old Joseph Omboni Jr., a Dobbs Ferry resident, businessman and volunteer firefighter who was killed in a motorcycle accident Sunday afternoon.

“He was a great friend, very outgoing. He’d do anything for anybody, never asked for anything in return,” said DJ Zanke, a mechanic at Dobbs Ferry Automotive, which Omboni owned. “He was an amazing, genuine person, and he’s just one of those friends that you can never replace.”

The accident occurred at about 2 p.m. on the northbound side of the Taconic State Parkway north of the Pines Bridge Road exit, New York State Police Investigator Joseph Becerra said. Omboni, riding a 2007 Suzuki, changed lanes from the right to the left, striking the rear of a passenger vehicle and skidding off onto the grassy median, he said.

Omboni struck a guard rail and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the car, described as a man from Yonkers, and his passengers were not injured.

Zanke said the loss of his friend of the past eight years was a shock, but he wants people to remember Omboni for the kind way he treated others.

“His passions were his friends and helping people, his business,” he said. “He loved the shop, loved working on cars and motorcycles. He was just a really friendly person. He just wanted to help anybody that he could.”

Omboni was a volunteer firefighter with the Livingston Hose Company in Dobbs Ferry.  According to his Facebook page, Omboni attended Archbishop Stepinac High School in White Plains and Pace University in Pleasantville.

The fire department posted Omboni’s name on its front wall in honor of his memory, and a brief message was posted on the fire department’s website.

“It is with deep regret the Dobbs Ferry Fire Department announces the passing of firefighter Joseph Omboni Jr. of the Livingston Hose Company,” the website said. “Memorial information will be posted as soon as details are available.”

The Edwards-Dowdle Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry said arrangements would likely be scheduled by Tuesday morning.

Anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has additional information is asked to contact state police at 914-769-2600.
