Ardsley Police to See Raises Under New Contract

ARDSLEY, N.Y. – The village of Ardsley and the Ardsley Policemen’s Benevolent Association came to an agreement on a new contract this week, with the PBA receiving pay raises in each year of the new deal.

“You’re always looking for a salary increase and you’re looking to maintain parity among the other police agencies in the area so you can maintain competitiveness,” said Ardsley PBA President John Sheeley. “When you go to hire and replace employees you don’t want to have to get the bottom of the barrel so to speak.”

In 2011 the PBA received a 2.95 percent increase in pay from 2010 and will see a 5 percent increase in 2012, a 3.5 percent increase in 2013, a 2.75 percent increase in 2014, a 2.65 percent increase in 2015 and a 2.65 percent increase in 2016.

Under the contract for 2012, salaries will start at $39,432 for officers fifth grade and reach as high as $126,629 for a lieutenant. In the last year of the contract, 2016, the salaries will range from $44,186 up to $141,897. 

Both sides agreed to a couple of concessions to help offset the cost of raises in the upcoming years. The PBA will now receive time and a half on weekends compared to two times pay in previous years. Under the new deal the PBA will also contribute to its health insurance costs for the first time.

“The PBA is contributing nothing right now so this is a big change,” said Ardsley Mayor Peter Porcino. “It starts this coming June where they’re contributing 1 percent, and then that increases each year by a quarter percent and then by the last year of the contract it will be at 2 percent.”

Porcino also said that the two major concessions were something the village had insisted to be included in the new contract.

“Two things we were keen on trying to get from the beginning, I’d say that those were two items we didn’t have in the past,” Porcino said. “There probably were other things that we dropped demands for along the way but those were certainly right at the top of our list.”

Sheeley said he was happy with the deal, which expires on May 31, 2017, because it’s fair to both the Ardsley PBA and the village itself.

“I would say that the raises would be high if we didn’t do those givebacks,” Sheeley said. “If you really looked at it monetary wise it’s very consistent with the economy and I think it’s pretty fair all around.”
