Dobbs Ferry Library Deploys Nook Technology

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Ned Canora said checking out one of the Dobbs Ferry Public Library’s new Nooks is an even more efficient way of reading your favorite book.

“First of all, they’re much lighter,” said Canora, a staff member at the library. “You can take them with you just about anyplace and they hold up to 1,500 books each, so you can put a myriad of titles on them.”

The library just started signing out the new e-readers last week, so patrons now have an opportunity to test them out. 

“We have six Nooks and two of them are fiction, two have non-fiction titles, one is just New York Times bestsellers and one is a mix of just about everything, including children’s titles,” Canora said.

The Nooks come preloaded with about 25 books. Canora said the library plans to add titles each month.

“We’ll be adding certainly a couple of titles every month — probably 10, 12 titles a month — and then, depending how they circulate, we may end up putting fiction on all of them,” he said.

There are certain stipulations, however, to checking out one of the new Nooks. Interested residents must be Dobbs Ferry cardholders over 18 years old and must sign a borrower’s agreement to check one out.

Canora said the idea has been in the works for a while, and now, residents can try out a piece of technology they might not own themselves.

“It was part of our strategic plan; the money for the units and the titles all come from the Friends of the Library,” he said. “Basically, the idea is to allow people to borrow the Nook and see how it works, pending their own purchase.”

Above all else, though, the new tablets provide a wealth of opportunities for the library and its members.

“You have basically a whole library on them,” Canora said.
