Do you think the new Tappan Zee Bridge should be named in honor of the late NY Gov. Mario Cuomo?
- Absolutely
- Absolutely not
- Not sure
- The new bridge shouldn't be named after any person
In a poll released by Reclaim New York Initiative, it was determined that 53.8 percent of Hudson Valley residents disapprove of renaming the bridge in the name of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s father. There was a 33 percent approval rating and just 14.7 percent of respondents thought the bridge should be named for the former governor when selecting from multiple options.
According to the poll, 80 percent of voters believe that Westchester and Rockland residents should have had a say on the vote, which was pushed through the Legislature in a “late-night scheme.”
In an ongoing poll conducted by Daily Voice that garnered 4,389 votes as of Wednesday, July 12, more than half (2,498) of voters said “absolutely not” to naming the bridge after Cuomo, while just 556 supported the name. More than 1,000 voters don’t think the bridge should be named after any one person.
“People aren’t stupid,” Reclaim New York Initiative Executive Director Brandon Muir stated. “They see legislators cut deals with the Governor to name a bridge in the dead of night before telling the public what the tolls will be and they’re furious. This was classic Albany. It was a bad deal cut at the eleventh hour, without citizen input – and now the Governor has a real mess on his hands. Just wait until the new toll is announced.
“The Governor and lawmakers ignored the priorities of citizens struggling to afford to live here in favor of naming a bridge. It would be laughable if the real affordability crisis residents face wasn’t so immediate. The data shows people see the games and backroom deals and intend to make politicians pay at the ballot box.”
