The 26-member team, composed of girls ages 9-14, will be the first cheer team in the history of Suffern Pop Warner to compete in the nationals.

The road to Orlando included a pair of strong showings at recent events.

Led by head coach Jennifer Vaval, the squad competed at the county competition in Monroe on Oct. 15, followed by the regional cheer and dance championship in Trenton, N.J., on Nov. 12.

The top two teams at each level then moved on to the nationals.

The Mounties claimed the first-place trophy in their category at the regional competition.

The surprise win, however, has many of the team’s families scrambling to fund the pre-holiday trip, which costs $700 per person.

The girls will be fundraising this weekend at Bagel Train and Crystal Clear Car Wash in Suffern.

They will also be holding a bake sale at Small Business Saturday in downtown Suffern on Nov. 26.

Chipotle on Route 17 in New Jersey is also lending a hand: When patrons mention the team on Small Business Saturday, a portion of the proceeds will go toward the trip.

A pasta dinner is also in the works.
