RAMAPO, N.Y. -- A number of Orthodox Jewish leaders hammered the state Education Department and its appointed monitor, Dennis Walcott, for "stabbing the religious community in the back" when they recommended the state appoint someone with veto power to oversee East Ramapo school board decisions, according to Lohud.com.
Last week, the state Board of Regents approved the recommendations of a three-person monitor team. Of the team's 19 recommendations, the proposal that calls for a monitor is drawing the most outrage, added Lohud.com.
During a news conference last week, three speakers, state Assemblyman Dov Hiking, Rabbi Yosef Golding, the CEO of Agudath Israel of America, and Rockland Legislator Aron Wieder, vowed to fight the recommendation in the state Legislature, said Lohud.com.
Wieder also announced his resignation as Legislature majority leader saying the issues had become a distraction, added the news source.
