White supremacist web host from North Bergen arrested

Hal Turner, the hate-spewing, Webcasting white supremacist, is at it again. This time, police arrested him at his North Bergen home and charged him with inciting readers to “take up arms” against two Connecticut lawmakers a state ethics employee.

“Mr. Turner’s comments are above and beyond the threshold of free speech,” Connecticut Capitol Police Chief Michael J. Fallon said in an e-mail announcing the warrant. “He is inciting others through his website to commit acts of violence and has created fear and alarm. He should be held accountable for his conduct.”

An extradition hearing will take months. For now, a bail hearing is set for Monday for Turner, 47, who was arrested before he could fulfill a promise on his blog to publicize the home addresses of his targets.

Turner had battled a bill, since scuttled, that would have transferred certain power in the Roman Catholic Church from church officials to lay members.

Trouble flared again last week, when the Bridgeport Diocese filed a federal lawsuit against state ethics officials, who are investigating whether church officials violated lobbying laws by organizing a rally at the state Capitol to protest the measure without registering as lobbyists.

The “Turner Radio Network” blog vowed to “foment direct action against these individuals personally. These beastly government officials should be made an example of as a warning to others in government: Obey the Constitution or die.”

“If any state attorney, police department or court thinks they’re going to get uppity with us about this, I suspect we have enough bullets to put them down, too,” it said.

It’s been more of the same with Turner for years. For instance, he recently deemed the shooting of a Kansas abortion provider a “righteous act.”

Authorities have charged him with inciting injury to persons or property.

On his own blog, Bishop William E. Lori of the Bridgeport Diocese thanked parishioners yesterday: “We deplore and condemn hateful language and advocacy of violence of any kind. Such speech is contrary to the civil and respectful discourse that reflects the Christian values we hold so dear.”

Turner, who depends on donations to stay in business, has promoted rounding up and killing Jews, denies the Holocaust ever occurred, and refuses to recognize the existence of the state of Israel.

His antics are a veritable laundry list of hate. On December 6, 2006, Turner announced: “We may have to ASSASSINATE some of the people you elect on Nov. 7!

“If you are too stupid to turn things around with your vote, there are people out here like me who are willing to turn things around with guns, force and violence. We hope our method does not become necessary.”

Last year, he urged violence against a Massachusetts school superintendent who established a new curriculum supporting gays and lesbians. He went on to provide the superintendent’s home address and other information.

Various allegations surfaced last year. The Southern Poverty Law Center later reported that they had “revealed… that Turner was an FBI informant,” and the Anti-Defamation League reported that “a neo-Nazi Website had posted material reportedly found by the hackers, including alleged exchanges between himself and law enforcement agents that indicated that Turner had been providing information to them.”
