ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- A Spring Valley man was charged with four counts of assault on Monday after striking and seriously injuring a mother and her three children, including an infant in a stroller, on Route 59 in Monsey.

Albert Gomez, 62, plowed into the family, including a 38-year old mother and her three children — two daughters ages 13 and 9 and a 3-month-old son, around 2:45 p.m. as they walked along the westbound shoulder of Route 59 near Town Square Mall, said Ramapo Police Det. Sgt. Brian Corbett.

All of the injured were treated at the scene by Hatzolah Ambulance. The three females were transported to Westchester Medical Center. The male infant was transported to Nyack Hospital before later being transferred to Westchester Medical Center to undergo emergency surgery, police said.

Their conditions were not released Tuesday morning.

Gomez, who was driving a 1999 Toyota at the time, was not injured. He was charged with two counts of felony assault, two counts of misdemeanor assault, four counts of reckless endangerment and reckless driving, Corbett said.

He is being at the Rockland County Jail on $150,000 bail.

The accident closed Route 59 between Route 306 and Kennedy Drive for several hours while police investigated the crash. The road re-opened shortly before 7 p.m.

The accident is still under investigation by the Ramapo Police Accident Investigation Unit and additional charges may be pending, Corbett said.

Ramapo Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to contact the Town of Ramapo Police at 845-357-2400.
