SPRING VALLEY, N.Y. -- A fire Tuesday at a Spring Valley home with illegal apartments revealed deplorable conditions, according to authorities, reported lohud.com.
The fire, in the basement of a two-family residence on Murin Street, was contained to the basement and took more than 30 minutes to put out, according to Spring Valley Fire Chief Ken Sohlman, lohud.com reported.
After the fire was extinguished, authorities found illegal apartments in the basement and throughout the home, said Gordon Wren, Rockland's coordinator of fire and emergency services. He added that a single set of stairs was the only exit and that windows were too small for adults to exit through, reported lohud.com.
The fire in Spring Valley comes just after the Division of Building Standards and Codes gave the village 30 days to increase enforcement of its housing codes or face a potential state takeover, said lohud.com.
