RAMAPO, N.Y. -- Ramapo police have arrested a 60-year-old Canadian woman on a drug charge.

The arrest occurred when a traffic safety officer conducting radar speed enforcement stopped a vehicle on College Road in the Viola section of the town at approximately 3 p.m. on Wednesday, police report.

The driver exhibited signs of impairment to the officer, and standardized field sobriety tests were performed at the scene, according to officials.

Upon completion of the tests, the driver was arrested and charged with driving while ability impaired by drugs, police report.

It is believed that the suspect had taken prescription medication, which impaired her ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, according to officials.

The defendant was arraigned in Ramapo Justice Court, and is scheduled to return for a court appearance later this month to answer the charge, police report.

Ramapo police officers responded to eight motor vehicle accidents on Wednesday.

The sites of the accidents include: Route 59 in Airmont; Cherry Lane in Airmont; Route 202 in northeast Ramapo; Camp Hill Road in northeast Ramapo; Ladentown Road in Ladentown; Forshay Road in Viola; and two on Route 306 in Viola.

Four of the accidents involved injuries, according to officials.

Ramapo police responded to 127 calls on Wednesday, including 16 alarm activations, eight medical emergencies and two fires.
