A resident called the Ramapo PD at about 3:45 a.m. Thursday, after hearing a window smash in the Chestnut Ridge neighborhood. Officers found the damaged vehicle in a driveway. A back-up officer, while canvassing the area, noticed suspicious movement at Children's Park on Grotke Road. He observed a male exit the woods and enter a cab.
The man was in possession of proceeds of this crime, the department says -- as well as others in the area, so is a suspect in those crimes as well.
The suspect has been charged with criminal mischief, grand larceny, criminal possession of stolen property, and a vehicle and traffic related warrant, the department said, and more charges may be pending.
The man was arraigned and transported to the Rockland County Jail.
The department emphasizes that residents shouldn't leave valuables visible in parked vehicles. In the Thursday-morning break-in, cash was visible inside the car, and the suspect allegedly smashed a window of the locked car.
On Thursday, Ramapo Police handled a total of 159 calls, including 13 alarm activations, two fires, 14 medical emergencies and 12 arrests -- including charges for criminal mischief, grand larceny, fugitive from justice, suspended licenses and several warrants.
Ramapo PD also investigated 10 motor vehicle accidents, in Airmont, Sterlington, Hillcrest, Monsey, Viola and New Hempstead.
