A collaborative effort between emergency responders and local residents helped save seven people after a house fire broke out in Blauvelt.

The Orangetown Police Department responded to a working house fire on Glynn Oval in Blauvelt just before 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 16.

Numerous homeowners on Glynn Oval observed a large amount of smoke coming from a neighbor's attic vent, police said.

The homeowners called the police and then were able to make contact with the individuals inside of the residence. The neighbors assisted in safely getting the seven occupants out of the residence out before they were overcome by the smoke and fire.

Fire Departments from Blauvelt, Orangeburg, Tappan, Pearl River, Central Nyack, and West Nyack all responded to extinguish the fire. South Orangetown Ambulance and Medic 21 also responded to assist with any possible injuries.

The Orangetown Police Department Detective Bureau, along with the Orangetown Fire Inspector, Orangetown Building Department, and the Rockland County Sheriff Department Arson Unit, responded to the scene and are in the process of ascertaining how the fire began.

"We are happy to report that all seven of the occupants of the home, along with their family dog and pet lizard, are safe and sound and there are no reported injuries to any first responders," Orangetown Police said.
