Larceny Pharmacy Investigation Leads To Leandra's Law Arrest In Ramapo

ROCKLAND COUNTY, N.Y. -- An investigation Thursday into a larceny at a local pharmacy in Airmont, led Ramapo Police Detectives to discover a 39-year-old New Hempstead woman had driven to the store while impaired with her young daughter in the vehicle, police said.

The unidentified woman was charged with larceny and DWAI/drugs under Leandra's Law after officers responded to the store for a larceny by the woman, police said.

Suspecting the woman was under the influence, officers conducted several field sobriety tests, which she failed, police said.

She was released on her own recognizance and is scheduled to appear in court at a later date.

Leandra's Law, which makes it an automatic felony on the first offense to drive drunk with a person age 15 or younger inside the vehicle, is named after Leandra Rosado, an 11-year-old girl who was killed on the Henry Hudson Parkway in New York City on Oct. 11, 2009, when her friend's mother flipped the car they were in while allegedly under the influence of alcohol. Six other children were also injured during the incident.
