A Spring Valley man is crediting the calming presence of the crew on Emirates airline flight EK521 for helping him and other passengers through a scary crash landing and fire Wednesday in Dubai, according to lohud.com.
Passengers and crew survived but one firefighter was killed responding to the accident, and 10 people were hospitalized. There were 282 passengers and 18 crew members on the flight from India, lohud.com reports.
Jerin George, 22, a Rockland Community College graduate now attending Stony Brook University in Long Island, said he could see smoke out the window as the plane attempted to land, and people on board were terrified. After everyone was evacuated, the plan burst into flames, lohud.com says.
George was on the flight with his family visiting relatives in his native India. They are planning to take a flight from Dubai to New York, lohud.com reports.
Officials with Dubai-based Emirates released a statement Wednesday and held a news conference, saying they were thankful for the safety of passengers and crew. A video statement and video from the news conference is available on the company's Twitter page.
