Melissa Salgado, DVM is a board-certified doctor of veterinary medicine, specializing in critical care and emergency medicine.

She is an expert in emergency and critical care medicine, the animal equivalent of the intensive care unit.

In addition to veterinary school, a criticalist must complete a minimum of three additional years of intense training in emergency, surgery, and critical care through completion of a residency program.

Here the focus is on the most up-to-date techniques for diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening disease processes in an emergency and the critical time while the animal is recovering.

Once the veterinarian has completed these years of specialty residency training, the individual must then pass a rigorous board certification examination administered by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care.

Upon successful completion of training and examination, the veterinarian is a Diplomate of the ACVECC.

“Dr. Salgado’s specialized training over the past several years makes her uniquely qualified to oversee our emergency service. Our goal is to deliver the best care possible and Dr. Salgado's skills augment the excellent care we already provide," co-owner of Valley Cottage Animal Hospital, Dr. Diane Tortorice.

Salgado previously worked at Red Bank Veterinary Hospital and VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center before her move to Valley Cottage.
