WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. - For the last four years, the matchup in the Section 1 Class A lacrosse championship game had been the same - Mamaroneck vs. Lakeland/Panas. So no one was surprised to see the two rivals facing off again in the nightcap (the last of three championship games) Thursday night on the turf at White Plains High School.
Mamaroneck came in as the defending champ, and had won three of the last four Class A titles, but it was the Rebels who held on this time, claiming an 11-10 victory and their second sectional championship in the last three years.
The Rebels broke a 10-10 tie with six seconds remaining in regulation, with Griffin Shiland nailing the game-winner. Mamaroneck had evened the game at 10-10 on a goal from Emmett Fay with 28 seconds left.
Lakeland/Panas plays in a regional game Wednesday, June 1 at Yorktown High School against the Section 2 champ, either Niskayuna or Shenendehowa.
