Robert Langley, candidate for Putnam County Sheriff, who is opposing incumbent Sheriff Donald Smith stated that it is time to restore integrity to the office of our county sheriff. Beside reminding voters that Langley served most of his career under former Sheriff Thoubboron, who county residents ousted by electing Smith, I need to share something I witnessed regarding Smith that warmed my heart convincing me he was the right man for the job. At a deputy cadet graduation cere.mony early during Smith's tenure, Sheriff Smith concluded by addressing the cadets by reminding them that "you don't work for the Sheriff Department of Donald Smith, but rather for the Sheriff Department of the PEOPLE of Putnam County. Smith further reminded the cadets that in everything they did, even when apprehending an alleged suspect, that they demonstrate respect and professionalism. The same holds true today. Besides being superbly trained our deputies are forever professionals n every sense of the word thanks to Sheriff Donald B. Smith who, besides being our Sheriff who has restored professionalism and respect to the office to which he serves, is also a retired U.S. General with qualities that he has blessed residents of Putnam County with during his tenure. Putnam County needs a man like Sheriff Smith. To those who chant the rhetoric of change along with the slogan " a cop's cop", ask yourself if you want to return to the situation that we had before we were blessed with Sheriff Smith.
