The officer, who has not been named, went to purchase the vehicle that was posted in a Facebook Marketplace ad around 7 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 4 in the area of 472 Ruby St., said New York City Police.

When the officer and his brother-in-law arrived, a man almost immediately pulled out a gun and demanded the money, said the NYPD.

The officer had reportedly brought $24,000 to the meet to purchase a Honda Pilot.

The officer pulled his weapon and gunfire was exchanged between the two, NYPD Assistant Chief Michael Baldassano said.

The 5-year-old veteran stationed in the 66th precinct in Borough Park was struck in the head and was rushed to Brookdale Hospital where he is listed in critical condition, NYPD said.

The officer's identity has not been released. According to ABC 7, he lives on Long Island, in Deer Park.

"Please keep this young officer in your prayers," said Keechant Sewell, NYC Police Commissioner. "He is currently fighting for his life."

The NYPD has been joined in the investigation by federal authorities who are currently tracking the Facebook Marketplace arrangements.

“We will catch the person responsible for this act,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said. "An officer conducting a simple errand and a dangerous person pulled out a firearm. As we see so often in this city, too many illegal guns are in the hands of bad people and doing bad things."

The suspect fled the area and has not been captured.

The NYPD announced Monday, Jan. 6 that there is a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
