The fire took place in Dutchess County the city of Poughkeepsie around 1:20 a.m., Sunday, Jan. 22 at 372 Mansion St.

First arriving fire units found heavy fire in the rear of the building on the first and second floors, said City of Poughkeepsie Fire Chief Joseph Franco.

Information from bystanders on the scene reported that all of the residents were of the building, officials said.

A second was transmitted around 1:30 a.m. due to the large volume of fire, the chief said.

Crews made an aggressive interior attack on the fire and were able to knock it down by 2:15 a.m., Franco said.

"Unfortunately, one dog and one cat perished in the fire," he said.

No other injuries were reported.

The Red Cross was called in to provide assistance to the tenants which included seven adults and four children.

The house was deemed uninhabitable by the Poughkeepsie Building Department.
