The $2.2 million construction project to improve safety and traffic flow between Interstate 84 and Route 312 in the Town of Southeast is officially underway, the New York State Department of Transportation announced.

The project will include the installation of redesigned turning lanes, better-coordinated traffic signals, pavement markings, new signage and more in an effort to improve efficiency and safety for motorists traveling between the two major roadways.

The project will also help provide better access to local stores and businesses.

Part of the project also includes the repaving of Route 312 and part of the I-84 Eastbound on-ramp.

"This project will allow for a much smoother commute to I-84 from Southeast," Putnam County Executive MaryEllen Odell said. "The longer turning lanes, new traffic lights and other additions will be a great improvement."

The major lane closures during the project are expected to occur mainly during overnight hours (9 p.m. to 6 a.m.) on weekdays. However, the NYSDOT also warns that motorists may still experience brief traffic shifts or lane closures during the daytime. Work is expected to be completed in the fall.

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in work zones. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.

“I want to thank the NYS Department of Transportation for recognizing the traffic situation at the interchange between I-84 and Route 312 in Putnam County and taking action to correct it,” said State Sen. Peter Harckham. “Once the upgrades have been completed, Southeast residents and commuters will have a much safer and expedited traffic flow and local businesses will benefit from the improved driving conditions and repaving.”
